Free to Be Me (Weekly Recovery Reflection)
True freedom begins when we stop trying to be who we’re not.
Quote:
“Freedom is not the absence of commitments, but the ability to choose—and commit myself to—what is best for me.” — Paulo Coelho
My Thoughts:
This week, as fireworks fade and flags flutter in the summer breeze, we’re invited to reflect on what freedom really means in our personal recovery. Not just political freedom, but emotional and spiritual freedom — the kind that lets us breathe deeper and live more honestly. Recovery teaches us that freedom isn’t about doing whatever we want; it’s about becoming who we truly are, without the masks we wore to survive.
Freedom in recovery means no longer being bound by shame, perfectionism, or the fear of judgment. It means allowing ourselves to feel our feelings, ask for what we need, and say “no” without guilt. It’s a return to our essence, our spirit. Every choice we make in alignment with our truth is an act of liberation.
Action for the Week:
Ask yourself: Where in my life do I still feel captive? Maybe it’s a belief, a relationship, or a habit that doesn’t serve the free, whole version of you. Journal about what freedom would look like in that area. Then, take one small action — even symbolic — to honor your movement toward it. Remember, freedom isn’t a destination. It’s a daily decision to choose your healing over your hiding.
